Mulch is the part of a hydroseed slurry that most people think about last and probably should think about first. It is the carrier that holds seed, water and nutrients against the soil while grass establishes, and the type you choose has a direct effect on germination, erosion protection, how much product you use, and even which machine you can run it through.
For NZ landscapers and civil contractors, the choice usually comes down to two main options: cellulose (paper) mulch and wood fibre mulch. While high-performance matrix products exist for extreme sites, these two form the backbone of day-to-day hydroseeding. Both work, but they behave differently and suit different jobs. This guide breaks down the practical differences so you can pick the right mulch for the site in front of you, and run a hydroseeder that is built to handle it.
What mulch actually does in a hydroseed slurry
A hydroseed mix is water, seed, fertiliser, a tackifier or binder, and mulch, blended in a tank and sprayed onto the ground. The mulch does the heavy lifting after application. It keeps the seed in even contact with the soil, holds moisture around it so it does not dry out, protects the surface from rain and wind, and gives you a visual guide to exactly where you have sprayed.
Get the mulch right and establishment is faster, more even and more resistant to washing away. Get it wrong and you can end up with patchy germination, poor erosion protection, or a slurry your machine struggles to mix and pump.
Cellulose (paper) mulch
Cellulose mulch is made from recycled paper and similar fibres, processed into a fine material that wets out and disperses quickly in the tank. It is the workhorse of general hydroseeding.
Where cellulose performs
Fast, easy mixing. It breaks down and hydrates quickly, so loads mix fast and pump cleanly, which keeps a crew productive across multiple loads in a day.
Even coverage. The fine fibres spread smoothly and give a clear, uniform mark on the ground so operators can see their coverage.
Cost-effective. For flat to gently sloping ground it delivers reliable establishment without the higher material cost of heavier mulches.
Ideal for lawns and subdivisions. New residential lawns, subdivision berms, sports fields and other open, workable areas are its natural home.
Where cellulose reaches its limits
Cellulose holds less moisture and has a shorter functional life on the ground than wood fibre, and on its own it offers less erosion protection. On steeper batters and exposed sites it typically needs a tackifier to help it bond, or a blend with wood fibre to stand up to rain and slope.
Wood fibre mulch
Wood fibre mulch is made from thermally processed wood, producing longer fibres that interlock once applied. It is the heavier-duty option, chosen where the site works against you.
Where wood fibre performs
Better moisture retention. The longer fibres hold more water for longer, which supports germination on exposed or drier sites.
Stronger erosion protection. Interlocking fibres form a tougher surface mat that resists rain impact and runoff, so it holds on slopes, batters and road cuttings far better than cellulose alone.
Longer on-ground life. It persists longer while grass establishes, useful where conditions are slow or harsh.
Where wood fibre costs you
Wood fibre is more expensive per unit, it is heavier and thirstier to mix, and at higher loadings it demands more from the machine. Very heavy wood fibre and bonded fibre matrix loads are typically run through large mechanical-agitation units, which is a different class of machine from the compact hydroseeders most NZ contractors actually need.
Hydroseeding is being applied to a steep roadside bank, where a heavier mulch mix can help improve moisture retention and protect the exposed surface from erosion.
Blends and bonded fibre matrix (BFM)
Many jobs sit between the two. A common approach is a blend, often weighted toward wood fibre with some cellulose, to combine the erosion performance of wood with the easy mixing and even coverage of paper. For the steepest, highest-risk slopes there is bonded fibre matrix, a wood-fibre product loaded with binders that cures into a strong protective layer. BFM delivers the best erosion protection available, at the highest cost and the heaviest demand on the machine, and it is generally reserved for the jobs that genuinely require it.

There is no single winner. The right mulch depends on the job.
Flat and gentle ground, lawns and subdivisions: cellulose is usually the smart, cost-effective choice, mixing fast and establishing evenly.
Slopes, batters, road cuttings and exposed sites: wood fibre, a wood-weighted blend, or BFM for the steepest work, where erosion protection is the priority.
Mixed job with both: many contractors run cellulose for the open areas and step up to a blend or wood fibre on the banks.
Match the mulch to the risk on the ground and you use the right amount of the right product, rather than overspending on heavy mulch where you do not need it or under-protecting a slope where you do.

Machine compatibility: why agitation matters
Your choice of mulch is only useful if your hydroseeder can mix and spray it cleanly. That comes down to agitation, the way the machine keeps the slurry blended in the tank. Jet (or hydraulic) agitation circulates the mix with a powerful pump, which is efficient, has fewer moving parts to maintain, and handles cellulose and lighter blends beautifully. Mechanical (paddle) agitation is generally reserved for the very heavy wood fibre and BFM loads run by larger mechanical units, which can be truck, trailer, or skid-mounted depending on the site footprint.
