James Scott is the General Manager of Operations at Russell Roads, a civil roading and infrastructure company in Hawke’s Bay. As an approved contractor, they do a lot of work for Local Government and large clients throughout the Hawke’s Bay.
James was one of the first users of the SweepMaster and his crew have had more time than most to form an educated opinion of the machine.
“On our projects, we go through a whole heap of processes building pavements and need a sweeper that can give us the option of working in tight small spaces, but also sweeping the road to a final surface before we seal it. We couldn’t achieve that with our own gear” explains James.
Seeking out something that could do the job led James to Master Machinery, and he’s never looked back. “We predominantly use the SweepMaster for our pre-seal pavement sweeping. Also sweeping off the loose chip after chip-sealing on our projects. We find it very versatile between the two and it’s met all of our requirements.” explains James.
One of the key areas of focus when designing the SweepMaster was to make it easy for anyone to use. It’s a key advantage for the machine and one James is eager to support;
“I’ve personally used the SweepMaster and shown other operators how to use it. Honestly, it is very, very easy to operate, and easy to pass on that information to new operators.”

As for the cab itself – that gets the seal of approval too.
“The ergonomics of the cab and all the luxuries of working within the SweepMaster cab are great. You’ve got really good visibility; everything’s at one touch of your finger; you’ve got fantastic air conditioning; a really good sound system; and the actual tractor unit is not very loud at all. It’s a pleasure to drive and operate.”
Of course, enjoying using the SweepMaster is one thing, but for James success very much depends on how safe it keeps his team, specifically when it comes to contaminants like dust – a real issue with roading work. “We have dust suppression on the units which really helps when you’re working in an open air environment or even in a closed air environment. Airborne contaminants are an environmental risk and with the dust suppression we no longer have to deal with that” offers James.
SweepMaster is fitted with a dust suppression system to keep dust at bay when working in open air or closed air environments.
Feedback from early users like James has been instrumental in making the type of incremental changes that further set the SweepMaster apart. For example, when we initially discussed the SweepMaster with James during the initial research phase for the machine, we learned of his need for a brush with a longer lifespan, so we incorporated a brush saving to meet that need, which impressed James; “Master Machinery have done all the work and calculated the right amount of pressure to apply to the pavement and the surface so that they get limited brush wear. It sweeps the pavement perfectly so it’s not too soft but it’s not too hard. Also, anywhere that we can save on plastic for the environment makes for a really good outcome.”
SweepMaster is fitted with a brush saving system to keep you sweeping for longer, while still performing a clean sweep.
Finally, James points to the advantage of the SweepMaster’s ability to operate in tight spaces: “It’s got an extremely tight turning circle. You can turn these sweepers in very very tight areas, you can do one point turns in a very very small space. I find the maneuverability very, very good. It’s got a high, medium and low ratio box in it and it’s such a well thought out machine for operating.”
If after reading this you’re still not convinced of the SweepMaster, we should let James have the last word and sum it all up for us…
“100% I recommend the SweepMaster for our application and for anyone else who has to get sweeping done. I haven’t found one better to date and the performance is second to none. You can take my word for it – it’s perfect.
